The progress of the vines has given us reason for hope this year. Carlos ordered rigorous pruning of the foliage to control the excessive vigor of the vegetation, provoked by copious rains at the end of spring. Prevention of diseases normally associated with moisture was handled by the application of sulphur and Bordeaux mixture, our usual treatments. The temperatures are also in our favor, the heat is arriving gradually and in the right moment. If these conditions continue favorably, we will have our usual harvest of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to our first harvest of Syrah. The young Merlot vines will give us some bunches to start evaluating its personality, though it is too soon to include it in our regular blend of Qubél.

Qubél in the Press…

This spring, we have received visits from various international journalists. The reflections from their visits have appeared in their respective publications.

David Moore, journalist and co-author of the book Wine Behind the Label tasted Qubél on-site with us to update the Spanish wine section of his book. He let us know that his book is available in an online version at his website, www.williamsonmoore.com.ue

Andrew Catchpole, a journalist and writer specialized in the wine sector, also came to the winery. His objective was to write and article for Harper’s magazine on the wineries of Madrid and the resulting article can be found at the end of the bulletin.

The North American magazine, Wine Enthusiast, will publish in October an 88 point rating for Qubél Barrica (Nature) 2003.

Qubél was one of the destinations for a group of Japanese journalists. Wine writer, Yoshiko Akehi coordinated the trip for representatives of the publications Gourmet Journal, Chikyu-no-arukikata, Taru Shuppan, y Shuhan News. A clip from the article that appeared in Gourmet Journal is at the end of the bulletin. This fall, Yoshiko Akehi will be in charge of a presentation of wines from the D.O. Wines of Madrid in Japan. Estrella will travel there to support our importer, Vintner’s Inc.

BS 2008 Etiqueta Mayrit

We are thrilled to have shipped our first order of our new wine, Mayrit Eco Barrica, to Bid Wine, our importer in Alberta, Canada. They will receive the wine in September, just in time to make its debut at a special fair for their clients. Estrella will be present with other winemakers in the Bid-Wine catalog, promoting their respective wines. Eco Barrica is an organically certified wine from our other brand, Mayrit. It is a mix of Tempranillo, Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot that was aged in our barrels during two months.
